# President Cyril Ramaphosa says the G7 Summit in Canada has been very meaningful, particularly for South Africa, being the president of the G20. Under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, enhanced efforts have been undertaken to align objectives and support the agenda of the G7 with that of the G20. Ramaphosa says they seek great cooperation in areas such as investment, international crime, climate change, and just transitions, as well as inclusive global growth and development:
# The DA says the National Student Financial Aid Scheme’s former administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, failed to leave a handover document for the new board. The party says this is despite earning 5.5-million-rand in the ten months and two weeks he was contracted. The DA says a handover report from the administrator would have been helpful to the board, given the numerous disclaimer audits and alleged mismanagement and corruption that caused the administrator’s appointment. It adds that it will submit a question to determine the exact terms of reference of Nomvalo’s contract.
# The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa is set to picket at the offices of Denel in Irene, Centurion, today. The union says it will expose the state-owned entity for refusing to grant workers their wage increases. Numsa’s spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, says Denel management has declined to grant salary increases to workers for the last five financial years. She adds that their members have to continuously protest to get what rightfully belongs to them:
# Canadian prime minister Mark Carney says his country will be imposing additional sanctions against Russia, including on 77 individuals and 39 entities. It will also be implementing sanctions on the trade of an additional 201 vessels and imposing new prohibitions on listed vessels, to further constrain the activities of vessels that are part of Russia’s shadow fleet. Carney says it is important to use maximum pressure against Moscow, which has refused to come to the table for ceasefire negotiations:
# Soccer: Mamelodi Sundowns got their Club World Cup campaign off to a winning start by beating South Korea’s Ulsan HD 1-0 in Orlando, Florida. Iqraam Rayners’ goal in the 36th minute and two vital saves by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams sealed the victory for the reigning PSL champions. Sundowns are now top of Group F after Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund played to a goalless draw against Brazil’s Fluminense in New Jersey. Sundowns’ next group match is against Dortmund on Saturday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-97-cents and the euro at 20-rand-67-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-16-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-77-dollars.
