# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says economic structural challenges need to be fixed to address inequality and skills mismatch between education and what the job market needs. On Monday, he delivered the keynote address at the national Youth Day commemoration in Potchefstroom, North West. Mashatile acknowledged that government could do more to create an enabling environment for young people:
Meanwhile, DA leader John Steenhuisen says it is a national tragedy that over 8.7-million young people are not in employment, education, or training. He commemorated Youth Day in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, where he outlined the party’s plans to fight youth unemployment. Steenhuisen says from within government the DA can, and will, insist on urgent reforms that will improve economic growth, and on the back of this, increase job opportunities for all citizens:
# The Eastern Cape government is urging community members with missing loved ones to come forward as the death toll from recent floods rises. Provincial government spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie, says search operations will continue until all are accounted for. She stressed the need for a proper record system to track unidentified bodies and assist families. She says that authorities are especially concerned about cases where entire families may have been lost in the disaster:
# The families of broadcaster Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu and his fiancé Zodwa Mdhluli have confirmed a memorial service will be held on Wednesday. This follows DNA confirmation that their decomposed remains were found in Rust De Winter. The couple went missing in February. Four of eight suspects have been arrested, facing charges including kidnapping and robbery. Ndlovu’s funeral will be held in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga. The families say the confirmation brings closure and call for justice.
# Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says they are on the way to achieving victory as the deadly conflict between Israel and Iran has entered its fifth day. In Israel, 24 people have been killed since hostilities began last Friday, while 224 people have been killed in Iran. Netanyahu says they are on track to achieve their two objectives: eliminating the nuclear threat and countering the missile threat. He added that Israel strikes regime targets, as opposed to the Iranian regime, which targets civilians.
# Cricket: The International Cricket Council has unveiled the complete schedule for the 50-over Women’s World Cup, with five cities across Sri Lanka and India playing host. India will face Sri Lanka in the tournament’s opener in Bengaluru on September 30th. Reigning champions Australia will begin their title defence against New Zealand. South Africa will open their campaign against England in Bengaluru on October 3rd, before moving on to Indore for a clash with New Zealand three days later, followed by a match against India on October 9th.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-79-cents and the euro at 20-rand-56-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-16-cents and Bitcoin trades at 106-thousand-909-dollar-60-cents. Gold sells at three-thousand-394-dollars-56-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-10-cents a barrel.
