# President Cyril Ramaphosa and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have held bilateral talks ahead of the G7 Summit outreach session beginning in Alberta today. Ramaphosa, accompanied by International Relations minister Ronald Lamola, represents the only African nation invited. The talks come as Canada hosts the G7 Presidency and South Africa prepares to assume the G20 Presidency later this year. Ramaphosa praised the trade, investment, and technological cooperation between the countries:
# The head of Gift of the Givers’ Search and Rescue unit, Ahmed Bham, says search and recovery efforts will intensify following the deadly floods in the Eastern Cape that claimed 88 lives, including a ten-year-old girl from Libode. So far, 83 bodies have been identified with 56 released to families, while five remain unidentified. He says a multidisciplinary team, including SAPS Air Wing and canine units, is combing areas around Mthatha Dam and nearby rivers:
# Police in Rustenburg, North West, have launched a manhunt after armed suspects shot and killed an elderly couple in the parking lot of a shopping centre over the weekend. George and Wilma Koster suffered fatal injuries in the incident, prompting police to urge witnesses to come forward with any information. Authorities warn the suspects remain armed and dangerous. Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact Crime Stop immediately.
# US President Donald Trump has ordered an expansion of the detention and deportation of migrants across the country as protests against his policies continue. Trump said he had directed the entire administration to put every resource possible behind this effort. He also promised to prevent “anyone who undermines the domestic tranquillity of the United States” from entering the country. Large-scale protests have broken out in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York against raids on undocumented migrants since 6 June. Trump has faced legal challenges and criticism for particularly his deployment of the military to quell the demonstrations.
# Motorsport: George Russell secured Mercedes’ first win of the season in the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday as the two McLaren drivers crashed in the final laps of the race. The Briton beat close rival and four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull under the safety car to claim his fourth career victory, with his teenage Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli finishing third. Championship leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren ended fourth and extended his lead in the drivers’ standings to 22 points ahead of Lando Norris who crashed into him on lap 67 of the 70-lap race.
And finally, Lewis Hamilton said he was shocked after learning that he had hit and killed a groundhog during the Canadian Grand Prix. The impact caused significant floor damage to his Ferrari, hurting his race performance. Hamilton, who owns a French bulldog called Roscoe that is often seen with him at Grands Prix, said he did not see the groundhog. He finished sixth in the race, and afterwards said as an animal lover he felt devastated and sad about the incident.
