BULLETIN 14 June 1 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Medical Association warns against waterborne diseases in the Eastern Cape
# Five people were killed in high-speed crash on N2 near Ermelo
# And soccer: Bafana Bafana advance to the COSAFA final
# South African Medical Association chairperson Mvuyisi Mzukwa has warned of potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera and gastrointestinal cases following floods in the Eastern Cape. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Mzukwa cited damaged water and sanitation infrastructure and overwhelmed healthcare facilities as major concerns. He said healthcare workers are under immense pressure, with limited resources and disrupted services, further worsening pre-existing challenges in the province’s health system:
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal premier Thami Ntuli says laws must be enforced to stop people from building in flood line areas. At least 86 people have lost their lives in floods in the Eastern Cape in the past week. Reflecting on the 2022 floods in KwaZulu-Natal that claimed 443 lives, Ntuli said profiteering from illegal developments worsens the risk. He urged urgent action from government, traditional leaders, and stakeholders. He emphasised the need to support municipalities in enforcing bylaws to prevent further tragedies and protect lives:
# Five people died in a tragic crash on the N2 between Ermelo and Mkhondo in Mpumalanga yesterday afternoon. The collision, involving two sedans and a truck, happened near Ngwempisi. One sedan, allegedly travelling over 170-kilometres-per-hour, failed to stop and hit another vehicle before colliding head-on with a truck. Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi urged motorists to obey traffic laws to prevent further tragedies:
# U.S. Marines deployed to Los Angeles made their first detention of a civilian yesterday. This comes as part of a rare use of military force to support domestic police and coming ahead of national protests over President Donald Trump’s military parade in Washington. The detention of a U.S. Army veteran and an immigrant who obtained U.S. citizenship, underlines a series of highly unusual events that have appealed to Trump supporters but outraged other Americans. About one-thousand-800 protests are scheduled across the U.S. on Saturday in opposition to the Washington military parade.
# And finally sports news:
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana booked their spot in the COSAFA Cup final after a 3-1 semi-final triumph over Comoros at the Free State Stadium last night. A fast start saw South Africa score twice early, including a Boitumelo Radiopane strike. Comoros replied through Ibrahim Madi, but Kamogelo Sebelebele’s second-half goal sealed the win. South Africa now face reigning champions Angola in tomorrow’s final. Comoros and Madagascar meet in the third-place playoff.
# And boxing: Boxing South Africa has appointed Tsholofelo Lejaka as its new CEO, effective from Tuesday. The position had been vacant since August 2020. Lejaka, who previously served as CEO from 2016 to 2020, returns with a strong track record of leadership. His appointment follows a five-month recruitment process aimed at restoring stability and growth. The board has expressed full confidence in his ability to rebuild and uplift South African boxing.
