Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have rugby: Bulls head coach Jake White has been full of praise for Leinster ahead of their United Rugby Championship final in Dublin on Saturday, saying the Irish team is years ahead of everybody else. Both teams have never won the URC trophy, with the Bulls set to make their third appearance in a final in four attempts. White says Leinster’s model is to be admired:
Meanwhile, the Springbok Women defeated Kenya 19-12 to record their second consecutive victory in the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup in Madagascar. The defending champions, who thrashed Uganda 62-7 in their tournament opener, scored three tries and managed two conversions. South Africa’s final match of the campaign is against the host nation on Sunday. Bok Women assistant coach, Franzel September, says they needed those minutes in the legs of some of the players who are in World Cup contention:
# Cricket: The Proteas Women suffered a four-wicket defeat under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method against the West Indies Women in the first one-day match in Barbados. Tazmin Brits scored 57 as South Africa posted 232 for nine in their 50 overs. The hostesses then chased a revised target of 180 in 34 overs after rain interrupted play, and reached that with two overs to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second ODI will be played on Saturday.
# Soccer: Co-host Mexico is engaged in a race against time to upgrade the iconic Azteca Stadium before the opening match of next year’s World Cup. The country will become the first to host the international showpiece for the third time when the tournament kicks off on the 11th of June next year. The stadium in the capital of Mexico City is being enlarged from 87- tot 90-thousand seats, and upgrades, centred on meeting world body Fifa’s standards, also include new changing rooms and bigger hospitality zones.
# And finally, motorsport: Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll will return to action at the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. The 26-year-old withdrew from the last race in Spain to undergo a medical procedure after experiencing pain in his hand and wrist. The team says the pain was related to a procedure he underwent ahead of the 2023 season after a fall from his bike, which injured his wrist. Stroll says he is excited to get back behind the wheel in front of his home crowd in Montreal.
