Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# A man is formally charged in the brutal murder of a Gauteng teenager
# Action is taken against prosecutors who undermine state cases
# And soccer: US officials say overseas spectators won’t have to worry about visas for the World Cup
# The Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng has formally charged a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder and mutilation of 14-year-old Likhona Fose. Her body was found in a veld in Durban Deep earlier this month. Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi was questioned on Monday and arrested yesterday. Magistrate Annalene Afrika postponed the case to next Wednesday for further investigations. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane welcomed community efforts in the arrest:
# Justice minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says action is underway against prosecutors who compromise state cases. This follows National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi’s retracted remark that the National Prosecuting Authority had been infiltrated by corrupt officials. ActionSA calls for Batohi’s removal over state capture failures, including the unresolved Gupta extradition. Kubayi defended the NPA, saying not all cases reflect institutional failure. Some individuals are under investigation, and disciplinary steps are being taken where misconduct has been found.
# The DA has warned that three-thousand-563 patients at Gauteng’s public hospitals are waiting for MRI scans. The machines are critical for diagnosing tumors and injuries. Charlotte Maxeke Hospital faces the longest backlog with two-thousand-347 patients waiting up to 12 months due to machine breakdowns. Only eight MRI machines serve over 12-million people, far below international standards. The DA’s Jack Bloom proposes partnerships with private hospitals to use excess capacity:
# Soccer: Officials of American host cities for next year’s World Cup have given the assurance overseas spectators won’t have to worry over visas, border control or social unrest. The tournament, co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, starts in a year’s time. The US organisers say president Donald Trump’s administration remains extremely supportive of the event, despite his border crackdown since his return to the White House, leading to civil unrest in California. World Cup games will be hosted in 11 US cities.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-78-cents and the euro at 20-rand-32-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-98-cents and Bitcoin trades at 109-thousand-268-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-330-dollars-38-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-27-cents a barrel.
# And finally: South African winemaker Johan Jordaan of Spier outside Stellenbosch has been crowned the 2025 Global Chenin Blanc Master Winemaker at the Master Winemaker 100 Awards in Paris. This honour follows two Spier Chenin Blancs winning Master gold medals. The recognition adds to South Africa’s growing reputation for producing world-class wines on the global stage. Jordaan credited the efforts of the team and praised the hands-on nature of working with chenin.
