# The DA is pushing for the modernisation of South Africa’s electricity grid
# And the Los Angeles mayor declares an emergency and issues a curfew
# The ANC says the convening of a National Dialogue marks an important effort to forge unity, rebuild trust and renew South Africa’s collective commitment to social and economic transformation. President Cyril Ramaphosa says the dialogue will drive progress towards Vision 2030 and lay the foundation for the next phase of the country’s National Development Plan. The ANC says it is through open, principled engagement that a renewed national vision will be defined, and a new social compact anchored in shared responsibility will be constructed.
# The DA says it is unapologetically driving a growth-first agenda within the government of national unity, focused on creating jobs, attracting investment, and delivering energy security. The party says, however, progress is being held back by those unwilling to make the urgent decisions required to modernise our economy. The DA’s, Nico Pienaar, says a key pillar of this growth agenda is the expansion and modernisation of the country’s electricity grid:
# The Public Servants Association says it is alarmed by unsafe and unhygienic food handling practices at Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. The PSA recently conducted an oversight visit at the hospital and confirmed that food service employees are being compelled to deliver uncovered meals to approximately 700 patients. This is owing to a shortage of essential tools of trade. The association’s Claude Naiker says this current situation compromises the integrity of healthcare services:
# Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass has declared a local emergency and a curfew for parts of downtown LA, in response to the looting and violence as protests against immigration raids continue. The curfew will be in place from 8pm until 6am and will last for several days. Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused president Donald Trump’s administration of pushing mass deportations that indiscriminately target immigrant families, regardless of their roots or risk:
# Rugby: Fly-half Jacob Umaga, who played a single Test for England in 2021, could make his debut for his family’s native Samoa. He is the nephew of legendary All Black Tana Umaga while his father, Mike, played 13 Tests for Samoa. Twenty-six-year-old Jacob was born in England and played for Wasps until its liquidation in 2022, whereafter he moved to Benetton Treviso in Italy. He was included in Samoa’s 35-man squad for next month’s Test against Scotland in New Zealand, and the Pacific Nations Cup in August.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-68-cents and the euro at 20-rand-19-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-84-cents and Bitcoin trades at 109-thousand-655-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-340-dollars-80-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-37-cents a barrel.
