# Police have charged a 39-year-old man for the murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose in Gauteng. Police say their Occult Unit linked him to the crime after questioning him. Likhona’s mutilated body was found in Roodepoort a day after she went missing last week. She was last seen in Durban Deep. The teen was buried in Alice in the Eastern Cape on Saturday. The man will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
# Statistics South Africa says manufacturing production fell by 6.3-percent in April compared to the same time last year. The biggest declines were recorded in the food and beverages sector, motor vehicles, and steel and metal products. However, production rose slightly by 1.9-percent from March to April. Stats SA’s Nicolai Claassen says production and sales have been declining over the past three months, showing ongoing challenges in the sector:
# Public Works and Infrastructure deputy minister Sihle Zikalala says the media narrative surrounding the appointment of Independent Development Trust CEO Tebogo Malaka is misleading and misrepresents the facts. He is accused of shielding the IDT from corruption probes and covering up procurement irregularities involving Malaka. Zikalala told the media the appointment process started before he took office, and he later paused it to allow for further checks amid allegations about office leases:
# Israel has deported Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, a day after the Gaza-bound aid boat she and 11 others were on, was intercepted by Israeli forces in the Mediterranean. According to Israel’s Foreign ministry, Thunberg departed Tel Aviv for France this morning after she agreed to be deported. Five of the six French citizens detained alongside her had refused to sign their deportation orders and would now be subject to judicial proceedings. Their yacht was intercepted while trying to deliver aid to Gaza in defiance of Israel.
# Cricket: All-rounder Wiaan Mulder has been selected in the Proteas’ team to play in the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s from tomorrow. This means batter Tony de Zorzi misses out. Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi is preferred to Dane Paterson. The rest of the team is captain Temba Bavuma, Ryan Rickelton, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada. Play in London starts at 11:30 SA time.
