# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has congratulated former domestic worker Thobeka Ntini-Makununika for earning her PhD in Philosophy from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The 32-year-old’s thesis is titled “Unravelling the dynamics of power in employer-domestic worker relations in contemporary South Africa”. Makaneta says Ntini-Makununika’s journey is inspiring, having worked part-time as a domestic worker from the age of 13 while pursuing her education:
# Profmed wants to support young doctors with a year of free medical aid through South Africa’s first digital locum marketplace, the finDR platform. The initiative will target qualified doctors and dentists under 30 who have completed community service in the past two years and are unemployed or newly employed. finDR is a platform that connects them to job opportunities, mentorship, and healthcare practices. Profmed says the aim is to ease their transition into the medical field and ensure they are supported as they begin their vital careers.
# Disney’s Lilo and Stitch starring Maia Kealoha and Hannah Waddingham topped the North American chart for the third consecutive weekend. Debuting in second place was Lionsgate’s Ballerina, a John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas as a dancer turned contract killer. Mission: Impossible -The Final Reckoning, the final film in the hugely successful Tom Cruise spy thriller series, took third place. Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends and New Line’s Final Destination: Bloodlines round out the top five.
# Rapper Kendrick Lamar was the big winner of the BET Awards held in Los Angeles. Lamar won album of the year for GNX, best male hip-hop artist, video of the year for, Not Like Us, and best collaboration alongside SZA for Luther. The rapper also won the award for video director of the year with his longtime creative partner, Dave Free. SZA and Chris Brown won best female and male R&B/pop artists, respectively. Mariah Carey and Jamie Foxx were among the Ultimate Icon award recipients.
# And finally: Rugby fans will now have an opportunity to participate in the Fantasy Rugby Championship, which is headed by New Zealand Rugby in collaboration with South Africa, Australia and Argentina. This marks the first official fantasy game for the southern hemisphere’s premier international competition, the Rugby Championship. The opening round on August 16 will see the Springboks host the Wallabies and New Zealand face the Pumas. Fans will have a chance to draft their ultimate 15 best players and compete for bragging rights throughout the tournament.
