Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Accountability Now calls for reform at the National Prosecuting Authority
# Eskom is adding extra megawatts ahead of a cold week
# And Donald Trump is considering selling his Tesla
# Accountability Now’s Paul Hoffman says the National Prosecuting Authority lacks some skill in prosecuting some cases. This includes losses in state capture cases including the striking off the roll of the 280-million-rand Estina Vrede dairy case last year and the Gupta brothers’ extradition. Speaking to the SABC News, he likened the NPA’s performance to a VW Beetle racing against Formula 1 cars, underscoring its lack of capacity to tackle complex corruption cases:
# President Cyril Ramaphosa met with judiciary heads including chief justice Mandisa Maya and Heads of Court at Mahlamba Ndlopfu in Pretoria to reinforce efforts to build a stronger justice system. Joined by Justice minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and deputy minister Andries Nel, the engagement aimed to improve court infrastructure, independence, and capacity. Ramaphosa emphasised cooperation between state arms to uphold the Constitution. Meanwhile, Maya hailed the meeting’s timing ahead of the Constitutional Court’s 30th anniversary, calling it a milestone in judicial collaboration and reform.
# Eskom says it plans to return a total of two-thousand-550-megawatts of generation capacity to service ahead of the evening peak on Monday, to further stabilise the grid before a cold week. The South African Weather Service earlier announced that severe and extreme winter weather will affect South Africa this weekend going into next week. Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena says the utility expects an increase in energy demand due to the inclement weather conditions:
Meanwhile, the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services remains on high alert to deal with extreme cold temperatures. The South African Weather Service announced that an intense cut-off low system is expected to affect South Africa over the weekend going into next week. Emergency’s spokesperson, William Ntladi says a significant and drastic drop in daytime temperatures is expected:
# US president Donald Trump says Elon Musk has “lost his mind”, and according to ABC News he has no plans to speak with Musk. A source familiar with the situation meanwhile has told Sky News the president is considering selling his Tesla, in a further sign that no resolution to the explosive bust-up is in sight. The row between two of the most powerful men in America comes a week after Musk left his position in the government. Musk posted a series of messages on X criticising the president’s signature tax bill as a “big ugly spending bill”.
# And tennis: Novak Djokovic suggested he may well have bidden adieu to Roland Garros after the 38-year-old was defeated 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 in the semifinals by Jannik Sinner on Friday. However, Djokovic allayed fears he would be calling time on his career just yet. He insisted he still has a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title in his sights. Djokovic has won Wimbledon seven times with 10 victories in Melbourne and three French Open titles. Last summer, he secured the only big title to have eluded him when he won Olympic gold on centre court at Roland Garros.
