# Three suspects have been shot and killed during a dramatic shootout with police on the N1 Highway in Sunninghill, Sandton. The incident has caused major traffic delays between Winnie Mandela Drive and Rivonia Road. Police believe the suspects were linked to a series of house robberies. Spokesperson Mavela Masondo says details are still unclear, and officers remain on scene. Motorists are urged to avoid the area while investigations continue.
# The Asset Forfeiture Unit has secured a preservation order worth over 13-million-rand to seize illegal mining equipment used around Kleinsee and Port Nolloth in the Northern Cape. The High Court in Kimberley granted the order for confiscated tools, generators, jackhammers, and drills that were found on restricted De Beers properties. The National Prosecuting Authority’s Mojalefa Senokoatsane, says the aim is to halt further illegal mining criminalty:
# Agriculture minister John Steenhuisen has fired his controversial chief of staff, Roman Cabanac, following a public outcry over past racist and offensive remarks on social media. The podcaster, known for his controversial views, confirmed his dismissal in a video on X, stating that he received the termination letter on Tuesday. Cabanac is considering challenging the termination:
# US President Donald Trump signed a new travel ban that comes into effect on Monday targeting 12 countries, reviving one of the most controversial measures from his first term. Trump says the measure was spurred by a makeshift flamethrower attack on a Jewish protest in Colorado that US authorities blamed on a man they said was in the country illegally. The move bans all travel to the United States by nationals of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
# Rugby: Seven South Africans have been included in the United Rugby Championship’s Elite Fifteen. The team was selected based on votes from the media across all five URC nations. Cameron Hanekom, Wilco Louw and Jan-Hendrik Wessels from the Bulls, André Esterhuizen from the Sharks and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu from the Stormers are the locally based South African players included in the team. RG Snyman from Leinster and Marnus van der Merwe from the Scarlets also made the elite team.
