# Agricultural organisation TLU SA says the Copyright Amendment Bill and the Performers’ Protection Amendment Bill are nothing less than a continuation of the systematic assault on private property rights in South Africa. The two bills have been submitted to Parliament by the ANC. TLU SA’s, Bennie van Zyl, is warning that these bills, under the guise of so-called fair use and protection, are designed to nationalise intangible assets such as copyright and intellectual property:
# The director-general in the Department of Water and Sanitation, Sean Phillips, says South Africa is on the brink of a severe water crisis, with ageing infrastructure, weak governance, and underinvestment fueling concerns. This comes as residents nationwide are experiencing dry taps and unreliable water supplies. He warns that urgent action is needed to prevent a full-blown crisis as the country struggles to secure its water future:
# Self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary Bushiri, have filed a review application in the High Court of Malawi in Lilongwe to set aside the judgment ordering their extradition to South Africa. The controversial couple fled to Malawi in 2020 after failing to comply with their bail conditions, leading to South Africa’s extradition request. They face a string of charges, including fraud and money laundering. In court papers, the couple argue that it would be unjust or oppressive to surrender them to South Africa.
# The United Nations Security Council has failed to pass a resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, after the US vetoed the resolution. The resolution also demanded the release of all hostages held by Hamas and the safe and unhindered distribution of humanitarian aid at scale into Gaza. Acting US Ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Shea, says America will not support any measure that fails to call for Hamas to disarm and leave Gaza:
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler has secured his spot on the 2025 US Ryder Cup team, becoming the first automatic qualifier for the biennial competition set to take place at Bethpage Black in Long Island, New York. This marks the 28-year-old’s third consecutive Ryder Cup appearance. Scheffler will be joined by five other automatic qualifiers, plus six players selected by Team USA captain Keegan Bradley. Scheffler says he will do everything he can to help the team reclaim the Cup from Team Europe.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-82-cents and the euro at 20-rand-34-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-15-cents and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-540-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-369-dollars-14-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-80-cents a barrel.
