# We start with Cricket: South Africa has reportedly roped in former England fast bowler, Stuart Broad, as a consultant ahead of the World Test Championship final against Australia, which begins at Lord’s next Wednesday. According to reports, the 38-year-old will attend a training session of the Proteas next Monday, where he will help the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Marco Jansen. The Proteas have assembled in the UK and will face Zimbabwe in Sussex tomorrow, as part of their buildup for the final.
And the Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has called time on his 13-year one-day international career with immediate effect. The 36-year-old, who is one of the most explosive batters in the history of the sport, made 149 appearances, scored three-thousand-990 runs, took 77 wickets and won two ODI World Cup titles. Maxwell will remain an active part of Australia’s T20 set-up in a bid to win next year’s short-form World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
# Tennis: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is through to the quarterfinals of the French Open, after defeating American Ben Shelton, 7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The Spaniard will face another American, Tommy Paul, who beat Australian Alexei Popyrin, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, while Italian Lorenzo Musetti saw off Denmark’s Holger Rune, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the women’s draw, defending champion Poland’s Iga Swiatek beat Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, to make the last eight, while top seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus defeated American Amanda Anisimova, 7-5, 6-3.
# Golf: Sweden’s Maja Stark carded a final-round 72 to claim her maiden major title with a two-shot victory at the US Women’s Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. World number one American Nelly Korda shared second place with Japan’s Rio Takeda on five under. South Korea’s Hye-Jin Choi and countrywoman Mao Saigo, who was chasing back-to-back major titles, shared fourth spot with China’s Ruoning Yin. Stark says she did not think a major title was possible for her:
# And finally, Roadrunning: Four University of Pretoria staff members are set to tackle South Africa’s most famous ultramarathon, the Comrades Marathon, to raise funds for students facing financial difficulties. More than 80 nations will be represented in the race, a down-run over approximately 89 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday. Proceeds raised by doctor Bianca Frost, Josiah Mavundla, Mfundo Nyitana and professor André Ganswindt will benefit the Vice-Chancellor and Principal’s Scholarship Fund. The university says these runners remind everyone that any goal worth achieving takes time and endurance.
