# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says President Cyril Ramaphosa will soon announce the date for the national dialogue aimed at addressing South Africa’s pressing challenges. The dialogue will bring together government, civil society, churches, traditional leaders, and political parties. Addressing the National Council of Provinces, Mashatile said the national dialogue is not a government-led event, but a collaborative effort to reset the country and build a united, inclusive society:
# The DA has welcomed the Reserve Bank’s interest rate cut as necessary relief for struggling households. DA Finance spokesperson, Mark Burke, says while the reprieve is welcomes, it’s no substitute for long-term reforms. Burke urges improved government spending, private sector involvement, and reduced red tape to drive sustained growth. He says that South Africans deserve a government that delivers lasting financial stability:
# Limpopo police have launched an investigation following the killing of a South African National Defence Force member at Lulekani township outside Phalaborwa. According to police, the man was shot multiple times while on his way to work at the 7-SAI battalion in Phalaborwa on Thursday morning. Five empty cartridges were found at the scene, and the soldier’s belongings, including his cell phones, were found in his possession. Police say the motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.
# Canadian prime minister Mark Carney has welcomed the court ruling that has blocked US president Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs. A three-judge panel at the US Court of International Trade ruled that Trump overstepped his authority when he used an emergency law to impose tariffs on nearly every country. Carney says the ruling is consistent with Canada’s long-standing position that the tariffs were unlawful as well as unjustified:
# Rugby: South Africa’s Griffin Colby and Quinton Immelman have been included in the list of match officials for the upcoming Under-20 Rugby Championship in Italy. Colby will do duty as a match referee whilst Immelman will be involved as a television match official. The match official panel includes ten referees and five TMOs. The world’s best 12 teams will play matches across four cities in Italy starting on June 29th until July 19th. South Africa is in Pool A alongside defending champions England, Australia, and Scotland.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-81-cents and the euro at 20-rand-25-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-2-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-862-dollar-10-cents. Gold sells at three-thousand-312-dollars-40-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-2-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Reach For A Dream turned the dream of 14-year-old Sacha Willemse from Upington in the Northern Cape into a reality. The gifted young swimmer living with a life-threatening illness recently got to meet his sporting idol, Olympic gold medallist Chad le Clos, in Cape Town. With today being Slipper Day, Reach For A Dream’s head of marketing, Ivor Cleary, says that with donations from the public, they can make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses:
