Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: While the Sharks have secured the European Challenge Cup, they have not had much success when it comes to the United Rugby Championships. Last season, they concluded the campaign in 14th spot on the log. The Durban-based side is preparing for a quarterfinal clash against Irish side Munster at Kings Park in Durban on Saturday. The Sharks’ captain, Springbok star Eben Etzebeth, says despite home ground advantage, they are expecting a tough game:
# Soccer: Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says she is disappointed at their performance against Botswana in their opening three-nation series at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. Goals from Adrielle Mibe and Jermaine Seoposenwe, who netted twice, saw South Africa edge Botswana 3-2. Banyana Banyana will face Zambia at the same venue on Tuesday. Ellis acknowledged there are areas for improvement ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July:
# Cricket: Australia’s squad for next month’s final of the World Test Championship against South Africa in London started with a team-building camp in the British capital. This preceeds the ramping up of training before the match starts at Lord’s on the 11th, with coach Andrew McDonald terming the recent period a muddled mess. Some of the players were at home and others were playing county cricket, while the week-long suspension of the Indian Premier League also had an influence.
# Tennis: Top seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus is through to the third round of the French Open following a straight sets victory over Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann. Defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland saw off Britain’s Emma Raducanu, 6-1, 6-2, while last year’s runner-up, Italian Jasmine Paolini, moved past Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. In the men’s draw, Italian qualifier Matteo Gigante knocked out Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. American duo Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe also made it through to the last 32.
# And finally, golf: 2027’s Ryder Cup competition will take place at Adare Manor in Ireland from the 17th of September, when the team event will celebrate its centenary. This will be the second time the country hosts the biennial competition after Europe beat the US at the K Club in County Kildare in 2006. This year’s Ryder Cup will take place in New York, also in September, with defending champion Europe again being captained by Englishman Luke Donald. The captains for 2027 haven’t been confirmed yet.
