Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Icasa is cracking down on the alleged unlawful use of Starlink in South Africa
# AfriForum accuses president Ramaphosa of violating the Genocide Convention
# And golf: The 2027 Ryder Cup will take place in Ireland in September
# The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has launched an investigation into allegations that Elon Musk’s Starlink internet-satellite service is operating in the country illegally. Government has gazetted relaxed B-BBEE licensing requirements for satellite service companies. The proposed policy direction provides alternatives to pave the way for Starlink to operate in the country. Icasa chairperson, Mothibi Ramusi, says should the investigation yield any breach with regulatory and legislative frameworks, they will explore the applicable enforcement actions within their disposal.
# AfriForum says president Cyril Ramaphosa is violating the United Nations Genocide Convention by not condemning the Kill the Boer chant. The organisation argues government’s failure to act against EFF leader Julius Malema for using the chant mirrors the same inaction South Africa criticised in its genocide case against Israel. AfriForum’s Kallie Kriel believes the slogan spreads fear and incites violence, especially amid ongoing farm attacks:
# Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, says intensified efforts by his department to control and eradicate foot-and-mouth disease are paying off. Disease management areas in Limpopo and the Eastern Cape will soon be lifted, and an urgent order has been placed for much-needed vaccines to the value of 72-million-rand. The ministry’s spokesperson, Joylene van Wyk, says there are still signs of active virus circulation in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng:
# The White House has reacted to a court ruling blocking president Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs, saying it is not for unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency. The Manhattan-based Court of International Trade ruled that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump invoked, does not give the president unilateral authority to impose tariffs on nearly every country. White House spokesperson Kush Desai says the administration is committed to using every lever of executive power to address the tariff crisis.
# Golf: 2027’s Ryder Cup competition will take place at Adare Manor in Ireland from the 17th of September, when the team event will celebrate its centenary. This will be the second time the country hosts the biennial competition after Europe beat the US at the K Club in County Kildare in 2006. This year’s Ryder Cup will take place in New York, also in September, with defending champion Europe again being captained by Englishman Luke Donald. The captains for 2027 haven’t been confirmed yet.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-92-cents and the euro at 20-rand-22-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-13-cents and Bitcoin trades at 107-thousand-924-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-280-dollars-26-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-29-cents a barrel.
