# Cape Town’s mayor calls for no cuts to municipal or infrastructure funding
# And Cricket: The Mumbai Indians sign three players
# Education activist, Hendrick Makaneta, has commended authorities for taking swift action against seven teenagers, who allegedly assaulted another girl in Yeoville, Johannesburg. The girls, aged between 13 and 14, were arrested after a video showing a group attacking a 14-year-old Bedfordview High School pupil went viral on social media. They were arrested and appeared in court on Monday. Makaneta says learners must always be reminded of the consequences of violent conduct:
# Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is calling on Finance minister Enoch Godongwana to ensure no cuts to municipal funding are proposed when he tables the national budget on Wednesday. The minister will attempt to table the budget for the third time after the two previous attempts were halted due to political and legal challenges. Hill-Lewis says over 107-million-rand was slashed from grant funding to Cape Town as part of nationwide cuts in 2023/2024:
# United Nations Humanitarian Affairs chief, Tom Fletcher, has welcomed the Israeli authorities’ decision to allow the delivery of limited aid to Gaza, after eleven weeks of blockade. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says food deliveries would continue only until the military and private companies have set up hubs to distribute aid under a US-backed plan, rejected by the UN. The UN spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, says nine of their aid trucks have already been cleared to enter the southern Kerem Shalom crossing:
# Cricket: The Mumbai Indians have signed England duo Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson and Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka. The three are replacements for Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch, who are all set to leave for national duties after Mumbai’s last league game. The replacement players will be available from the playoffs stage onwards, should Mumbai qualify. Mumbai Indians will need to beat the Delhi Capitals tomorrow to secure the final available playoff spot.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-4-cents and the euro at 20-rand-32-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-15-cents and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-966-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-227-dollars-10-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-84-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Streaming giant Netflix has stepped in to save the long-running children’s show Sesame Street, after Warner Brothers Discovery opted not to renew its five-year deal for the programme. Netflix has signed a deal with Sesame Workshop, which will see the streaming service air season 56 later this year. The new season will feature fresh format changes and the return of fan-favourite segments like Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck. Sesame Workshop says it is excited to continue helping children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.
