# Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town have made the New York Times’ list of the Top 10 gardens in the world. Set against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, the garden showcases South Africa’s unique flora, including the fynbos biome and ancient cycads. The garden is ranked ninth, just behind The High Line in New York City, while Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Cranbrook, England, is the top-rated garden. Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment minister Dion George says Kirstenbosch is a national treasure.
# Plastics recycling organisation Polyco has partnered with non-profit RLabs to boost South Africa’s green economy by supporting micro-recycling businesses. Backed by 500-thousand-rand, the partnership will provide essential recycling infrastructure. RLabs, active in 24 countries, empowers communities through skills training and waste entrepreneurship. Polyco’s Lisl Doherty says this collaboration will unlock opportunities in the recycling sector:
# And finally: The shipping sector is setting sail for a low-emissions future following the approval of the International Maritime Organisation’s Net-Zero Framework. The framework sets targets to cut emissions by at least 20-percent by 2030 and 70-percent by 2040, striving for net-zero by 2050. Key measures include a global fuel standard and a pricing mechanism for ships exceeding emission thresholds. Revenues from the scheme will support low-emission technologies and assist developing countries. The framework is set for formal adoption in October and will become mandatory in 2027.
