Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# Tshwane University of Technology’s journalism alumnus, Ananias Ndlovu, was honoured as one of South Africa’s top 100 influential men, an initiative of the broader National Influential Men and Artes Awards. As the publisher of Naledi News and founder of the North West Media Awards, he was recognised for his long-standing contribution to the development of community media. TUT says Ndlovu’s inclusion on the list underscores the growing recognition of community media as a force for social change and development in South Africa.
# Reach For A Dream has celebrated over 800 nurses from partner hospitals across South Africa, who help make dreams come true for children living with life-threatening illnesses. Yesterday was International Nurses Day. The organisation says the nurses received a certificate of appreciation, a delicious doughnut, and a care package. Reach For A Dream CEO, Julia Sotirianakos, says nurses are often the first to identify a child in need, lift spirits on difficult days and ensure every detail is in place for a magical dream experience.
# Marvel Studios’ ensemble superhero film, Thunderbolts, topped the North American box office charts in its second weekend of release. Directed by Jake Schreier, the film brings together a band of dysfunctional outsiders and lesser-known comic book characters, who discover their potential to be heroes when working together. Ryan Coogler’s thriller Sinners came in second in its fourth weekend. The second-top-grossing video adaptation of all time, A Minecraft Movie, placed third. Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2 and Clown in a Cornfield rounded out the top five.
# New Zealand cyclist Dion Smith was almost knocked off his bike by a runaway goat during the third stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia. Smith said he spotted a small herd of goats next to the road and moved to the side to avoid a collision, but one of the animals darted across the road, right into his path. Smith was pushed onto the grass verge but managed to stay on his bike and rejoin the road shortly after. The goat appeared unharmed and trotted away.
# And finally: Today is World Cocktail Day, a spirited nod to the craft of mixology and global cocktail cultures. It was in 1806 that the first known definition of the word cocktail appeared in the American newspaper, The Balance And Columbian Repository. It defined a cocktail as a stimulating liquor beverage, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters. This was essentially the blueprint of what is today known prominently as the old-fashioned cocktail. Some of the most-loved cocktails globally are margarita, cosmopolitan, mojito, and negroni.
