# More South Africans are unemployed as the rate increases to 32.9-percent in the first quarter

# Unemployment in South Africa has increased by one percentage point from the fourth quarter of last year to the first quarter of 2025. Statistics SA announced the Quarterly Labour Force Survey shows there was a decrease of 291-thousand in the number of employed people, while there was an increase of 237-thousand in the number of unemployed people. These changes resulted in the official unemployment rate increasing from 31.9- to 32.9-percent in the first quarter. The expanded unemployment rate increased by 1.2 percentage points to 43.1-percent.
# The African Media and Communicators Forum and the National Press Club have commended police for their continued hard work in solving the murder case of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli. National Press Club chairperson, Antoinette Slabbert reacted after three more suspects were arrested at their hideout in Nokaneng near Rust de Winter in Limpopo this morning, which brings the total to eight. She says some of the suspects have already appeared in court:
# Referendum Party leader, Phil Craig says they are currently in Washington in the US, raising awareness of the issues faced by South Africans, and promoting Cape independence as part of the solution. Craig says it has established that the ANC is an organisation which is now deeply reviled by many, there are no illusions whatsoever about its complete lack of moral fibre, and its blatant hypocrisy now defines it domestically and internationally:
# The Zimbabwean government has admitted that it cannot eradicate cholera. This follows 11 confirmed deaths in the latest outbreak since November. Health experts have meanwhile argued that the disease is preventable and can be eliminated, but cite a lack of political will. Health minister Douglas Mombeshora says there are plans to prevent the disease from spreading:
# Soccer: One of the most decorated managers in the sport, Carlo Ancelotti, has agreed a deal to become Brazil’s new head coach. The 65-year-old Italian will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, and will be in charge for Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Ecuador next month. Ancelotti is one of the most successful coaches in the Spanish giants’ history, having won three Champions Leagues and two LaLiga titles in his two spells in charge.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-29-cents and the euro at 20-rand-33-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-17-cents and Bitcoin trades at 103-thousand-424-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-254-dollars-80-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-17-cents a barrel.
