In this bulletin:
# The Police re-arrested the Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso on charges of violation of the Immigration Act
# NERSA calls on municipalities to calculate their electricity tariffs based on the costs
# And, a diver dies in preliminary operations to recover a tech tycoon’s sunken superyacht
# The Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso has been re-arrested for alleged violation of the Immigration Act in East London in the Eastern Cape this morning after a church service. Last month, Omotoso and his co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho were found not guilty on 32 charges including rape, sexual assault and human trafficking. National police commissioner Fannie Masemola says the Department of Home Affairs will give an update on the matter:
# The City of Tshwane has won its case in the Labour Court over the 2023 salary exemptions. The DA’s Cilliers Brink says the council’s decision to apply for exemption was very difficult, and was not made to spite or punish employees. He says the DA and its coalition partners came under intense pressure to cave to union demands, including by ActionSA, who was then still part of the DA coalition:
# The National Energy Regulator says it requires that all municipalities calculate their electricity tariffs based on the costs incurred in supplying customers. Nersa has announced the commencement of the review process for municipal tariff applications for the 2025/2026 financial year, which are set to be implemented on 1 July. Regulator spokesperson, Charles Hlebela says to date, NERSA has received a total of 130 applications, all of which are supported by cost of supply studies:
# A diver died on Friday during preliminary operations to recover British tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s superyacht from the waters off the coast of northern Sicily. The 56-meter-long Bayesian went down near Palermo in August last year when it was likely hit by a very strong downward wind, killing seven people. Police said the 39-year-old Dutch diver drowned on Friday while he was underwater in Porticello. The attempt to lift the yacht off the seabed is expected later this month and should help shed light on how a supposedly unsinkable vessel disappeared into the sea.
# And finally some rugby news: South Africa’s chances of winning the Under-20 Rugby Championship are slim. They play New Zealand in the final round in Gqeberha tomorrow and need at least a bonus point victory while also hoping Argentina beats Australia. The Baby Boks were victorious over the young Pumas in their first match, but then squandered a 17-point lead against the young Wallabies to lose 29-24. Argentina has to bounce back from Tuesday’s humiliating 75-21 loss to the Baby Blacks.
