# The Constitutional Court rules against the loss of South African citizenship upon gaining foreign citizenship
# Soccer: Real Madrid rushes to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold before the start of the Club World Cup
# And a robber blows off his own leg in a cash-in-transit heist in Thokoza
# The DA welcomes a landmark Constitutional Court ruling that protects the rights of South Africans with dual citizenship. The court declared a section of the Citizenship Act unconstitutional. This section had previously stripped citizens of their status if they acquired a second nationality without prior permission. The DA’s Adrian Roos says the ruling restores citizenship to all those affected and is a major victory for nearly two-million South Africans living abroad:
# The Department of Employment and Labour says new sectoral targets under the Employment Equity Act are not racial quotas, but a way to ensure fair workplace representation. Defending the changes in the High Court in Pretoria, the department argued the targets were developed in consultation with affected sectors and are flexible. The department’s legal representative, Fana Nalane, told the court the changes to the law are needed to fix ongoing inequality in jobs and to support transformation across different sectors:
# Russia and Ukraine each released 205 captured soldiers in the fifth prisoner-of-war exchange since the beginning of the year. Moscow says the exchange was brokered by the United Arab Emirates, adding that its soldiers were currently in Belarus undergoing medical and psychological check-ups. The prisoner swap comes as US-mediated ceasefire talks between the two sides appear to have stalled, and as Moscow gears up for its massive 9 May parade to mark 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War Two.
# Soccer: Real Madrid is rushing to complete the signing of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold before the Club World Cup in the US. The 26-year-old English international announced yesterday he plans to leave the English club at the end of June. He represented the Premier League champion on senior level since 2016 after playing for the club since he was five. The Spanish giants reportedly approached Liverpool to release Alexander-Arnold earlier since the tournament starts on the 15th of next month.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-22-cents and the euro at 20-rand-69-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-40-cents and Bitcoin trades at 94-thousand-317-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-385-dollars-82-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-40-cents a barrel.
# And finally: A suspected robber blew off his leg while attempting to bomb a cash-in-transit van during a robbery in Thokoza on the Gauteng East Rand earlier today. The explosive device detonated when the man reportedly attempted to bomb an armoured van. Authorities are investigating the incident and pursuing suspects believed to be involved in the foiled heist. No cash was reported stolen.
