# We start off with rugby: Springbok Sevens coach Philip Snyman says winning the Sevens World Championship in Los Angeles proves the team is back to where they should be. Following pool wins against France, Great Britain and Argentina, and New Zealand in the semifinals, the Blitzboks defeated Spain 19-5 in the final. Snyman says the team delivered an amazing performance throughout the entire tournament:
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler put on a dominant performance to win the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas, his first victory of the year. The American carded an eight-under-par 63 to finish on 31 under, eight clear of South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen, to capture his 14th PGA Tour title. Van Rooyen matched Scheffler’s 63 to finish at 23 under, three shots ahead of American Sam Stevens. Scheffler was full of praise for van Rooyen:
# Motorsport: The 15th Simola Hillclimb event in the Western Cape turned into a tragedy when seasoned competitor Pieter Joubert died during an accident. The accident occurred during his first run on the second day. According to the event organisers, Knysna Speed Festival, Joubert lost control of his vehicle while travelling on the high-speed uphill section, after a suspected mechanical failure. He was declared dead at the scene, and authorities are conducting a full investigation.
Other motorsport news: McLaren’s Oscar Piastri started from fourth on the grid to win the Miami Grand Prix, his third successive Formula One victory. The Australian’s teammate, Lando Norris, recovered from dropping back to sixth after a first-lap incident with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to finish second. Mercedes’ George Russell claimed the final spot on the podium. Verstappen finished fourth ahead of Williams’ Alex Albon. Piastri, who has extended his drivers’ championship lead over Norris to 16 points, says he still has some things to improve on:
# And finally, tennis: Norwegian Casper Ruud has won the Madrid Open for his maiden ATP Masters One-thousand title. The 26-year-old battled past British number one Jack Draper in three sets to win the biggest title of his career. Draper misses out on a second Masters One-thousand title in two months after winning in Indian Wells in March. Ruud, who will move up to seventh in the world rankings, says it’s an incredible feeling to accomplish one of his goals:
