# ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has honored uMkhonto we Sizwe combatants Benjamin Moloise and Abraham Mngomezulu as courageous anti-apartheid activists who fought for democracy and equality. The event marked the return of their remains, decades after their execution by the apartheid regime, providing a moment of closure for their families. Speaking at their reburial ceremony, he emphasised that their sacrifices symbolise the struggle for freedom:
# Justice minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has endorsed president Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to establish a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into alleged delays in prosecuting apartheid-era crimes. The commission aims to investigate whether previous administrations hindered investigations referred by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to the National Prosecuting Authority. She said that families of victims are seeking justice and compensation for unresolved cases dating back decades:
# The National Press Club and African Media and Communicators Forum have called on national police commissioner Fannie Masemola to intervene in the case of missing journalist Sibusiso Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdhluli. It has been 74 days since tthe couple was last seen on 18 February. With no leads or arrests, the organisations have doubled the reward to 100-thousand-rand for information.
# The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has launched a murder investigation of a 31-year-old female police officer from Bishop Lavis who was found dead yesterday morning in Langa, Cape Town. Her body was discovered inside her vehicle on Bennie Street near a primary school, bearing multiple gunshot wounds. She had reportedly left her Kraaifontein home the previous evening to attend a church service in KwaLanga. No arrests have been made. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact SAPS.
# A well-known guest house owner from East-London, 65 year old Karen Carter was found lying near her car with stab wounds by her friend, in the village of Trémolat in the Dordogne region of France, last Tuesday. Mrs Carter’s husband, Alan, who is in South Africa, said she was such a decent, lovely person, and spoke of the family’s shock. A 69-year-old local woman was arrested on Thursday as part of an investigation into the mother-of-four’s death. In an update on over the weekend, prosecutors said she had been released.
# And, Athletics: Akani Simbine seems to be the man to beat this season after he had won the 100 metre sprint at the second Diamond League meeting in Keqiao near Shangai in China yesterday. In a thrilling finish in 9.98 seconds he beat Jamacian Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson by 0,01 seconds. Letsile Tebogo from Botswana was third in 10,03 seconds. Thompson was faster out of the blocks, but Simbine managed to overtake him towards the end. Simbine won the opener Diamond League meeting last week in China in a time of 9,99 seconds.
