# Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile has welcomed the guilty verdict against Kelly Smith, Jacquen Appollis, and Steveno van Rhyn in the Joslin Smith case. The Western Cape High Court in Saldanha Bay found the trio guilty of kidnapping and human trafficking. The commissioner says investigations continue, and hopes Smith will finally reveal what happened to six-year-old Joslin, who vanished on 19 February last year:
# Lawyers for Human Rights has welcomed the Constitutional Court’s decision allowing inmates to use personal computers in their cells for educational purposes. The court ruled this week that it’s vital for rehabilitation. The declaration of invalidity was suspended for one year to allow policy revisions by Correctional Services. The organisation’s Nabeelah Mia told Newzroom Afrika the move supports inmates’ reintegration into society through education:
# British comedian and actor Russell Brand appeared in a London court today to face five charges of rape and other sexual offences. The 49-year old became known internationally as the husband of pop star Katy Perry after forging a career in Britain with his risque comedy routines. The celebrity, dressed casually in a dark coloured open-necked shirt and jeans, spoke only to confirm his details before being ordered to appear in court again on 30 May. Brand faces two counts of rape, two of sexual assault and one of indecent assault.
# Soccer: Liverpool manager Arne Slot says that winning the Premier League title at Anfield was one of the best days of his life as he turned his thoughts towards next season. The Reds crushed Tottenham 5-1 on Sunday to seal a record-breaking 20th English league title with four games to spare, basking in a sensational atmosphere at their packed home ground. Liverpool travel to face fifth-placed Chelsea on Sunday before taking on Arsenal, Brighton and Crystal Palace in their remaining games.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-36-cents and the euro at 20-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-46-cents and Bitcoin trades at 97-thousand-236-dollars. # And finally, the City of Cape Town’s Library and Information Services is once again hosting a writing competition for children aged between 9 and 13-year-old. In 2024, the competition, which focused on environmental awareness, garnered entries from 100 young people. The theme this year focuses on a mysterious box.
