# The University of Pretoria plans to revolutionise wound care in South Africa with 3D-printed skin. Researchers have created special scaffolds that fit each wound, helping burns and ulcers heal faster. These skin substitutes have been found to lower the risk of rejection, reduce infection, and cost less. Patients have also been found to recover more quickly and feel better both physically and emotionally. This new technology is set to make a big difference in hospitals and people’s lives across the country.
# The 22nd edition of the highly popular Cape Town International Jazz Festival gets underway today. The festival kicks off with a free concert at Greenmarket Square before the main event takes centre stage at the Cape Town International Convention Centre tomorrow and Sunday. The lineup for the festival includes Ari Lennox, Black Coffee, Igor Butman Quartet, Thandiswa Mazwai and Incognito. The event seeks to celebrate local and international talent, showcasing the rich diversity of the jazz genre.
# Cape Town teacher Suzanne van der Merwe swam eight kilometres from Robben Island to Big Bay in three-hours-and-26-minutes to raise funds for learners in need. The Durbanville educator’s solo swim aimed to support learners at Hoërskool Stellenberg, where she teaches. Her effort has inspired the community to contribute towards educational initiatives for disadvantaged learners. Van der Merwe told News24 she decided to use the gruelling swim as an opportunity to also support Stellies Care, a school-based initiative that assists learners facing financial challenges.
# Toronto in Canada tops Time Out’s list of the best 15 places to travel on holiday in May. The main attraction in Toronto is High Park, which is home to over two-thousand cherry trees that flower in a stunning display of pink and white. Hokkaido in Japan is second, also famous for its Matsumae Park, which has 250 varieties of cherry blossom. Third is Athens in Greece, a perfect time to visit the ancient ruins before the summer months’ unbearable heat and large crowds. Memphis in the USA and Utrecht in the Netherlands, round off the top five.
# And finally: Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the Golden Globes for the second consecutive year in 2026. The ceremony, which honours the best in film and television, and has become known as “Hollywood’s Party of the Year”, will be held at the Beverly Hilton on the 11th of January. This year’s Golden Globes posted an average of 9.3-million viewers, a slight dip from the 9.4-million in 2024. Glaser says hosting the awards this year was without a doubt the most fun she has ever had in her career.
