Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with athletics: South Africa’s best talent will be showcased at Athletics South Africa’s senior track and field championships in Potchefstroom today. An exciting contest is expected in the men’s 100-metres, where world junior champion and Olympics silver medalist Bayanda Walaza will come up against athletes such as Wayde van Niekerk and Benjamin Richardson. In the women’s 100-metres, national title holder Viwe Jingqi will do battle with teenager Hannah Hope Vermaak, who beat her recently. The world indoor champion, Prudence Sekgodiso, will run in the 800-metres.
# Rugby: Junior Springboks coach Kevin Foote says he has 31 players who are fit and ready to play. The team has begun their preparations for the Under-20 Rugby Championship, which kicks off at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha next week. The second edition of the Southern Hemisphere tournament will bring together the best young stars from South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina, and Australia. Foote says he is satisfied with how the preparations are going:
# Soccer: Mamelodi Sundowns faces Egypt’s Al Ahly in Cairo tomorrow in the second leg of their CAF Champions League semifinals. Their first match in Pretoria ended in a goalless draw last weekend. Sundowns’ head coach, Miguel Cardoso, says they should be able to win tomorrow despite harsh conditions. Al Ahly’s head coach, Marcel Koller, believes his team can finish the job in the Egyptian capital after not allowing Downs to control the game at Loftus.
# Motorsport: World governing body F-I-A has formally approved US car company General Motors as a Formula One engine supplier from the 2029 season. This means the Cadillac team, which will join the grid next year, will use Ferrari power units until General Motors’ engines are homologated. The sport will have six different engine suppliers from 2029 as General Motors joins Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda, Red Bull Powertrains-Ford and Audi as the other power unit manufacturers.
# And finally, roadrunning: A new world record is on the cards in the London Marathon on Sunday. The current record of 56-thousand-950 finishers was set in the Paris Marathon earlier this month, while over 55-thousand athletes ran in last year’s New York Marathon. Sunday’s course starts at Greenwich Park and ends on The Mall just past Buckingham Palace. Along the route, runners could take in the sights of other landmarks in the British capital such as Tower Bridge and Big Ben.
