Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 22 April 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Today is World Earth Day, which is being marked under the theme, Our Power, Our Planet, calling for everyone to unite around renewable energy in a bid to triple clean electricity by 2030. Earth Day has become an internationally recognised day and is celebrated across more than 192 countries. Earth Day president, Kathleen Rogers, says that at a time when environmental challenges and opportunities are rapidly evolving, Earth Day continues to unite individuals, organisations, and governments around a shared mission: to drive meaningful action for the planet.
Meanwhile, the minister of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dion George, is urging all South Africans to join in with protecting the environment. He is calling for everyone to unite around renewable energy. George says the department is steadfast in its efforts to protect the country’s rich fauna and flora. He says a landmark achievement has been brokering a court case to save the iconic African Penguin from extinction, ensuring this treasured species endures for future generations.
# And finally: Invasive Kariba weed has taken over dams in Johannesburg’s Lonehill and Witkoppen Spruit Parks. The Salvinia Molesta, more commonly known as Kariba weed, is clogging up waterways and harming aquatic life. Johannesburg City Parks says the fast-growing weed thrives in polluted, nutrient-rich water made worse by sewage leaks. It adds that the metro, through partnerships, aims to address the root causes, particularly pollution from sewage leaks, while implementing mechanical removal and biological control methods.
