Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: The Stormers’ Springbok forward Deon Fourie’s future is in doubt after suffering a serious leg injury during the weekend’s United Rugby Championship match against Connacht. He had to hobble off the field only minutes after coming off the bench. Coach John Dobson says it looks like the 38-year-old suffered a broken tibia which could keep him out for the rest of the year. Fourie told Dobson after a previous long-term injury he doesn’t want to end his career being taken off the field on a golf cart.
# Motorsport: McLaren’s Australian driver, Oscar Piastri, overtook his British teammate, Lando Norris, on top of the Formula One drivers’ standings after winning the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix this weekend. This was the 24-year-old’s third victory of the season and he now has 99 points, with Norris on 89. Red Bull’s world champion, Max Verstappen of the Netherlands, is in third place in the standings after finishing second in Jeddah, with Charles Leclerc of Monaco clinching the final podium place for Ferrari. Norris was fourth.
# Soccer: Burnley and Leeds have secured automatic promotion to the English Premier League for next season. Captain Josh Brownhill’s first-half double saw Burnley beat Sheffield United 2-1 to seal the Clarets’ immediate return to the Premier League. Leeds thrashed Stoke City 6-0 as they secured their return to the top flight two seasons after suffering relegation. The two teams each have 94 points and neither can now be caught by third-placed Sheffield United, who will head into the Championship play-offs.
# Tennis: Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz has renewed respect for his famous compatriot Rafael Nadal over Europe’s gruelling claycourt season. The world number two lost to Denmark’s Holger Rune in the final of the Barcelona Open this weekend after winning the Monte-Carlo Masters a week earlier. Alcaraz also plans to play in another tournament in his home country, the Madrid Open, this week, with the claycourt season culminating in the French Open, which Nadal won an unprecedented 14 times. Alcaraz says it’s tough to adapt to another tournament within days.
# And finally, Laureus World Sports Awards: The world’s most decorated gymnast, Simone Biles, was named sportswoman of the year, while Swedish pole-vaulter Mondo Duplantis captured the men’s honour in Madrid. Barcelona soccer player Lamine Yamal won the Breakthrough of the Year award, while soccer team Real Madrid won the Laureus World Team of the Year award. Swimmer Yuyan Jiang won the Sportsperson of the Year with a disability award. Twenty-two-time Grand Slam tennis champion Rafael Nadal was honoured with the Laureus sporting icon award.
