# AfriForum Youth is demanding an investigation into a reported sangoma traditional healers’ ritual at a women’s residence at North West University’s Potchefstroom campus. The group says the incident, which included loud screams and ancestral prayers, happened on Saturday night and left students frightened. AfriForum Youth’s Yvonne Gerber wants the university to set clear rules on cultural practices in residences, provide counselling, and train staff to handle student concerns better:
# A manhunt has been launched for a group of suspects who hijacked and kidnapped two businessmen in Midrand in Gauteng yesterday. The victims were hijacked on a car rental premises and taken to bushes along the R21, where they were forced to hand over their bank cards and PINs. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says their stolen Range Rover was later found in Tembisa:
# The Maldives has banned Israelis from visiting the luxury tourist archipelago in solidarity with the Palestinian people. President Mohamed Muizzu ratified the legislation shortly after it was approved by Parliament today. The ban will be implemented with immediate effect. The Maldives, a small Islamic republic of one-thousand-192 strategically located coral islets, is known for its secluded white sandy beaches, shallow turquoise lagoons and Robinson Crusoe-style getaways.
# Soccer: World governing body Fifa is considering a playoff between Los Angeles and Club America from Mexico for a place at the Club World Cup in America. This follows the disqualification of Mexican Club Leon over multi-club ownership rules. Fifa president Gianni Infantino says they should have the result of Leon’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the next few weeks and will then make a decision. Thirty-two teams will take place in the tournament which takes place from 14 June to 13 July.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-91-cents and the euro at 21-rand-45-cents. One British pound costs 25-rand-3-cents and Bitcoin trades at 85-thousand-603-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-219-dollars-28-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-93-cents a barrel.
# And finally: SANParks has successfully restocked its educational display tank with endangered Knysna seahorses at the Thesen Island office in Knysna. This initiative aims to raise public awareness and support conservation efforts for this unique species, found only in the Knysna, Swartvlei, and Keurbooms estuaries. The restocking involved introducing six young adult seahorses from the Knysna Estuary to enhance genetic diversity and bolster the tank’s breeding population. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the threats they face, including habitat degradation and pollution.
