# The ANC is getting ready for its birthday rally in Mpumalanga
# Law enforcement officials are strategically placed at major routes to regulate traffic flow
# And, two men were arrested for the deadly New Year’s shooting in Soshanguve
# The ANC will hold its 112th anniversary celebrations in Mpumalanga. The chairperson of the ANC in the province, Mandla Ndlovu, says he has been inundated with requests from ANC supporters wanting to attend the event. The party has a jam-packed programme in the build-up to the event on 13 January. From Saturday, the ANC’s national executive committee members will embark on a “massive door-to-door” campaign. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula will embark on a site visit to Mbombela Stadium on Thursday, while ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the January 8 statement on Saturday the 13th.
# The Department of Transport and Community Safety anticipates moderate to heavy traffic as holidaymakers return from their destinations. The southbound N1 towards Gauteng, as well as on the R81, R71 to Polokwane, and the R25 between Groblersdal and Dennilton are expected to see large traffic volumes this week. The department’s Tidimalo Chuene cautions motorists against impatience at tollgates:
# The Basic Education Department has admitted its efforts to place graduate teachers has not yielded the desired outcome. # Two people were arrested on Tuesday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of four people, including a teenage girl, in Soshanguve on New Year’s Day. Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the bodies of the victims were found on the street after the shooting. It was previously reported that 80 empty rifle cartridges were found at the scene as well as 19 cartridges from a 9mm firearm:
# Japanese authorities confirmed the deaths of five people in yesterday’s crash between a passenger aircraft and a Coast Guard plane at the Haneda Airport in the capital of Tokyo. All the victims were on board the Coast Guard plane, which was en route to deliver aid after the power earthquakes on New Year’s Day which claimed the lives of at least 57 people. All 379 passengers and crew of the Japan Airlines Airbus escaped unharmed before the plane exploded into a ball of fire.
# Cricket: Indian captain Rohit Sharma says his team’s young batters will simply have to find a way to cope with South Africa’s challenging conditions. The second Test starts at Newlands in Cape Town today, and Sharma doesn’t expect conditions to be much different from those at Centurion, where India was beaten by an innings in the first Test last week. Three of India’s top six batters are on their first tour of South Africa and they all struggled at SuperSport Park.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-58-cents and the euro at 20-rand-34-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-47-cents and Bitcoin trades at 45-thousand-208-dollars-57-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-60-dollars-96-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-10-cents a barrel.
