Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# Transnet National Ports Authority has completed a 60-million-rand upgrade of the automotive berth at the port of East London. CEO Phyllis Difeto says the project deepens and strengthens the berth, now allowing two 200-metre car carriers to dock simultaneously. With a boosted capacity of 790-thousand vehicles per year, the port reinforces its role as a key hub for the broader automotive industry. Difeto says the upgrade improves efficiency and aligns with national infrastructure goals.
# Up to 13 children in Gauteng received prosthetic legs over the past year. This was made possible through a 600-thousand-rand donation from the Star Foundation to Jumping Kids. The donation went towards each child receiving and being fitted with a prosthetic leg. The initiative supports children affected by illness or injury, with the hopes that they can overcome their physical challenges and live full lives.
# The organisers of Comic-Con Africa’s Johannesburg edition say fans can still expect a packed programme despite this year’s event happening a month earlier. The event will take place in August due to planned renovations at the Johannesburg Expo Centre and an upcoming international event. The festival is set to return to its usual September schedule next year. The organisers say the over 70-thousand fans will enjoy gaming and eSports tournaments, comics, and trading card games, among other activities. Comic-Con Cape Town is still going ahead next month.
# Universal Studios is planning to build its first European theme park in Bedfordshire, England. Set to open in 2031 as the largest visitor attraction in the UK, it is expected to attract 8.5-million visitors in its first year. Universal has theme parks in Orlando and Los Angeles in the US, as well as in Japan, Singapore and China. UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, says a full planning proposal will be submitted to the government, with construction expected to start next year:
# And finally: Basketball icon LeBron James has become the first male professional athlete to be immortalised as a Ken doll by toy company Mattel. This special edition doll, which is in partnership with the LeBron James Family Foundation, captures the Los Angeles Lakers’ player unique fashion sense. It is also taller than the standard Ken doll. James says this is an opportunity to recognise the powerful impact of role models who instil confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness.
