In this bulletin:
# The Green Connection calls on government to stop all new fossil fuel projects
# The NPA reopens an inquest into the apartheid-era deaths of Chief Albert Luthuli and Griffiths Mxenge
# And golf: Defending champion Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are regarded as favourites to win the Masters
# The Green Connection and Natural Justice have formally lodged objections against exploratory oil and gas surveys in Blocks 9 and 11B/12B, of the Outeniqua Basin in the Western Cape. The organisations argue that the exploration, development, and downstream use of oil and gas resources will result in unacceptable significant emissions of greenhouse gases. The Green Connection’s Liz McDaid says to combat climate change, government must stop all new fossil fuel projects:
# KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions, Elaine Harrison, has decided to reopen the inquest into the deaths of former ANC president, Chief Albert Luthuli, and lawyer and anti-apartheid activist, Griffiths Mxenge. Luthuli, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, died in July 1967. The official report stated that he was hit by a train near Gledthrow station in Groutville, KwaZulu-Natal. The NPA’s spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, says Mxenge was found dead on a sports field in Umlazi in November 1981:
# The United Africans Transformation says it is appalled and heartbroken by yet another failure of the government of national unity to protect the most basic rights of South African children. This comes after the Department of Basic Education missed the March 31st deadline to eradicate pit toilets in schools. UAT’s spokesperson, Mighty Mabule, says there is a lack of political will to eradicate pit toilets:
# Golf: Defending Masters champion American Scottie Scheffler will play alongside compatriot Justin Thomas and Spain’s Jose Luis Ballester, as the first major of the year tees off at Augusta National in Georgia today. Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, who is aiming to become just the sixth man to complete a career Grand Slam, is grouped with Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg and American Akshay Bhatia. Three South Africans are in the 95-man field: former champion Charl Schwartzel, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Thriston Lawrence.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 19-rand-41-cents and the euro at 21-rand-40-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-97-cents and Bitcoin trades at 81-thousand-658-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-112-dollars-21-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-53-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Thousands of millionaires fled London in the past year with some moving to the United States or Asia. The exodus continued a decade-long trend that has been attributed to tax increases, failure to recover from the 2008 financial crisis and Britain’s acrimonious departure from the European Union. The annual World’s Wealthiest Cities Report, published by advisory firm Henley & Partners and data intelligence company New World Wealth, found some 11-thousand-300 dollar millionaires exited London last year.
