BULLETIN 3 April
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# Scientists say they have developed the world’s tiniest pacemaker, a temporary heartbeat regulator smaller than a grain of rice that can be injected and controlled by light before dissolving. While still years away from being tested in humans, the wireless pacemaker was hailed as a transformative breakthrough that could spur advances in other areas of medicine. The US-led team of researchers behind the new device say they were motivated to help the one percent of children born with congenital heart defects who need a temporary pacemaker in the week after surgery.
# A total of 67 young entrepreneurs are competing in the ninth edition of the City of Cape Town’s annual #YouthStartCT Entrepreneurial Challenge. The entrepreneurs will compete over six weeks in five categories, agriculture and farming, information technology, finance and business services, tourism and manufacturing. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says this year the highest number of applications were received from young people residing in Khayelitsha:
# Over one-thousand children from across Africa will amplify their voices at the second biennial Africa Children’s Summit from tomorrow to Monday at St John’s College in Johannesburg. Hosted by South Africa’s Department of Social Development in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the summit will focus on child-centred dialogue, policy recommendations, and advocacy. It will empower children to shape Africa’s future and amplify their role in decision-making processes.
# Cape Town firefighters and former Springbok player James Dalton are gearing up for the Two Oceans half-marathon this weekend. Firefighters Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan are participating in the marathon to raise funds for a much-needed Volunteer Wildfire Services vehicle. The team hopes this vehicle can help improve emergency response in the metro. With over nine-thousand-498 fires recorded last season, the service urgently needs support. Donations during the race are encouraged to aid these brave responders.
# And finally: Having lit up screens in the Oscar-nominated papal drama “Conclave”, British actor Ralph Fiennes is set to make his debut as an opera director in France. The Paris National Opera announced the 62-year-old, who has directed several films including a 2018 biopic about the dance legend Rudolf Nureyev, is set to stage Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” at the historic Garnier opera house in January next year. He played the opera’s title character in a 1999 screen adaptation of the tale of love, rejection and regret by his sister, Martha Fiennes.
