# South Africa’s Tyla, Doechii, and Erykah Badu were some of the honourees of the Billboard’s Women in Music event in California. The event honours influential women in music, spanning artists and industry leaders. Tyla, who burst onto the music scene with her hit Water, received the Impact Award. Hot off a Grammy win for best rap album for her LP Alligator Bites Never Heal, Doechii received the Woman of the Year award. Badu was honoured with the Icon Award.
# Queens from seven South African kingdoms have committed to working together across royal houses, to formulate a common vision of their collective contribution to peace and development in South Africa. They gathered at the University of Pretoria for mediation and dispute resolution training, and to articulate their roles in royal succession conflicts and disputes. The university says queens play an essential role in peace-making and dispute resolution in their communities, a task that requires extraordinary skill and tact in predominantly patriarchal settings.
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has wished the Muslim community well as they celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. The United Ulama Council of South Africa confirmed that the moon signaling the end of the blessed month of Ramadan was sighted in the country last night. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says the president is urging everyone to continue to be guided by the common values that unite everybody, such as generosity, compassion and empathy:
# Bethsaida Ministry, Missionvale Care Centre, Umphanda Foundation for Autism, and Ekuphumleni Elderly Home in the Eastern Cape have received donations of special blankets, which were used to create the world’s biggest Happiness Blanket. Last month, South Africans participated in creating the world’s largest blanket to honour the legacy of late former president Nelson Mandela. It was unveiled at the Nelson Mandela University’s Second Avenue Campus. Donations of the blankets to other organisations across the country will continue this month.
# And finally: Amazon MGM’s action thriller A Working Man starring Jason Statham topped the North American box office at its opening weekend. Statham plays a decorated military veteran who emerges from retirement after human traffickers kidnap his boss’s daughter. Disney’s Snow White dropped to second, while The Chosen: Last Supper, a faith-based series about Jesus and his disciples, debuted in third place. Universal and Blumhouse’s horror entry The Woman in the Yard opened in fourth place with A24’s Death of a Unicorn rounding out the top five.
