# The irivate sector called to participate in rail and port sector reform
# And rugby: Bulls thrash Zebre in URC clash
# ANC national executive committee member Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says the party reaffirms its unwavering commitment to turning around the state of local government and fast-tracking the delivery of basic services, particularly access to water and sanitation. He was addressing the media on the second day of the ANC’s four-day NEC meeting in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni. Ramokgopa says as the governing party, they do not take for granted the trust of the people, trust that is earned through decisive action, political accountability, and the restoration of functional municipalities:
# The Road Freight Association encouraged all companies that could become a third-party operator, to study the recently released Network Statement and to engage with the Department of Transport in getting rail operations back on a viable and efficient footing. The association’s CEO, Gavin Kelly noted that there would be many opportunities for road transporters and that there would be changes in the way in which transport functions, but the country needed to get the foundation pieces of the entire logistics chain running:
# South African National Parks will be conducting an ecological burn in Lower Tokai, Table Mountain National Park the next week. The burn is planned as part of the park’s Integrated Fire Management Plan, and will be controlled to avoid its spread in the area or to nearby residential areas. Spokesperson Charles Phahlane says it is vital that SANParks conserves all components of biodiversity in the park as part of its World Heritage Site status:
# Myanmar’s military rulers let in hundreds of foreign rescue personnel on Saturday after an earthquake killed more than 1,600 people, the deadliest natural disaster to hit the impoverished, war-torn country in years. Friday’s 7.7 magnitude eartquake, among the biggest to jolt the Southeast Asian nation in the last century, crippled airports, bridges and highways amid a civil war that has wrecked the economy and displaced millions. In neighbouring Thailand, where the quake rattled buildings and brought down a skyscraper under construction in the capital Bangkok, at least nine people were killed.
# And, Rugby: The Bulls continued their great form by beating Zebre by 63-24 for a bonus-point win in their United Rugby Championship encounter at Loftus Versfeld yesterday. The Bulls scored nine tries against the Italian team’s three, leading 28-10 at half-time. Meanwhile, the Lions were crushed 42-0 by defending champions Glasgow Warriors in their clash at Scotstoun Stadium. The win means the Glasgow teams moves to 2nd place on the log table. And Irish outfit and log-leaders Leinster managed to beat the Sharks on their homeground in Durban by 10-7.
