# First up we have motorsport: The South African Formula One bid steering committee has confirmed that three bids were received by the deadline of 18 March. The country is expected to submit its official bid to host a Grand Prix race in 2027 in May this year. South Africa last held a race at Kyalami in Gauteng in 1993. The committee says the evaluation process for the received bids will be concluded by the end of April. It adds that these proposals will have to comply with F1 requirements.
# Rugby: Springbok lock RG Snyman will play for Leinster for another year. He joined from another Irish team, Munster, last year after making his professional debut for the Bulls before moving to Japan. Bulls director of rugby, Jake White, reportedly wanted to bring Snyman back home, but Leinster won. The Irish team plays the Sharks in a United Rugby Championship clash in Durban tomorrow after their under-strength team lost by one point to the Bulls in Pretoria last weekend.
# Cricket: Lucknow Super Giants secured a comprehensive five-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad to earn their first win in this year’s Indian Premier League. Sunrisers posted 190 for nine after being asked to bat first with Travis Head scoring 47, while Shardul Thakur took four wickets. Nicholas Pooran then smashed 70 from 26 balls as he helped Super Giants reach the target with 23 balls to spare. Today Chennai Super Kings take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Meanwhile, Michael Bracewell will captain New Zealand in the five-match one-day series against Pakistan after Tom Latham was ruled out with a hand injury. Latham was supposed to stand in for regular skipper Mitchell Santner, who is participating in the IPL, but fractured his hand while practising in the nets. He will be out for at least a month. Bracewell led the Black Caps in the T20 series against Pakistan which New Zealand won 4-1. The first ODI will be played in Napier tomorrow.
# And finally, tennis: World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will face American Jessica Pegula in the Miami Open final on Saturday. Sabalenka defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini, while Pegula ended the fairytale run of teenage wild card Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. In the men’s draw, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic is through to the semifinals following victory over American Sebastian Korda. American Taylor Fritz, unseeded Czech Jakub Mensik, and Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov are also through to the semifinals.
