# Professor Madonsela says South Africa has improved its human rights landscape
# A huge fire at Britains Heathrow Airport disrupts flights
# And soccer: England’s new coach wants his team to play without fear
# Stellenbosch University professor Thuli Madonsela says as this year marks the 31st anniversary of democracy in South Africa, the country has improved its human rights landscape. She says human rights were violated during apartheid through systematic policies and legislation and government deprived black people their right to vote. Madonsela added so far, the country has also improved in political and civil rights:
And, the GOOD Party says as South Africans commemorates Human Rights Day, all citizens have a progressive Constitution that guarantees fundamental human rights, including the right to life, equality, dignity and freedom of expression. The GOOD Party secretary-general, Brett Herron says South Africans may have the right to housing but over five-million South Africans are estimated to still live in informal settlements:
# City Power has announced a criminal case will be laid against a senior manager from its Planning Department for tampering with an electricity meter. Following routine audits, irregular electricity purchases dating back to 2014 were discovered. City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the manager, who owns rental units, will also face internal disciplinary action. He confirmed the utility’s efforts to combat electricity theft and misconduct among employees to restore integrity and ensure financial stability.
# Britain’s Heathrow Airport said it would be closed all of today after a huge fire at a nearby electrical substation wiped out power, disrupting flight schedules around the world. The London Fire Brigade said around 70 firefighters were tackling the blaze in the west of London, which caused a mass power outage at Heathrow, Europe’s busiest and the world’s fifth-busiest airport. Around 150 people were evacuated from nearby buildings and thousands of properties were without power.
# And, Soccer: Coach Thomas Tuchel has urged England to play without fear after claiming they were “afraid” in a scathing assessment of their run to the Euro 2024 final under his predecessor Gareth Southgate. Tuchel will take charge of England for the first time when they face Albania at Wembley today in their opening World Cup qualifier. The German, who started work in January after being hired in October, is keen to instill a more dynamic attitude in his squad after watching their angst-ridden performances in last year’s European Championship.
