# The Cape Town Carnival, described as a colourful celebration of creativity, culture and the performing arts, returns to Green Point on Saturday. The carnival, which will be celebrating its 15th anniversary, will have several headline performers, including YoungstaCPT, DJ Ready D, Bravo Le Roux, Paxton Fielies and the SA Youth Choir. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says there will be around one-thousand-500 performers from across the metro, who will entertain spectators:
# Two young South African scientists will have an opportunity to showcase their innovative research at the International Festival of Engineering, Science and Technology in Tunisia next week. Hamzah Ismail and Vibhav Ramdas are both Grade 12 learners at St Dominics Newcastle School in KwaZulu-Natal. Eskom’s Parthy Chetty says Hamzah is set to showcase his research project titled, Developing eco-friendly, fire-retardant plastic bricks as an alternative in modern construction. He says Vibhav’s research project is Using Object Detection to Improve Road Maintenance:
# The Collen Mashawana Foundation has donated school shoes and classroom furniture to Adelaide Thambo School in Soweto. The donation will benefit up to 400 special needs learners. Founded 45 years ago, the school caters to children with physical disabilities, supported by 140 caregivers and teachers. The foundation has also pledged financial support to ensure the children receive the necessary care. The foundation’s founder, Collen Mashawana, says supporting individuals with disabilities is imperative so they can have a fair opportunity to thrive in society.
# A group of cyclists from Soweto are embarking on a 600-kilometre journey to Kimberley to raise 100-thousand-rand for the refurbishment of libraries at the Bethany Combined School in Klipspruit and Lodirile Primary School in Dobsonville. The event, dubbed TourDeLibraries, is led by local entrepreneur Mpumelelo Mtintso. It will start on Monday, with the aim to finish next Friday on Human Rights Day. The cyclists hope their adventure will also help raise awareness about road safety and the need for improved cycling infrastructure.
# And finally: Amazon MGM Studios is developing a biopic about 15-time major golf champion Tiger Woods, which will be the adaptation of Kevin Cook’s biography, The Tiger Slam. The film is set to focus on Woods’ greatest achievement, when he won the 2000 US and British Opens and PGA Championship, and then added the 2001 Masters to capture four major trophies in a row. Higher Ground Productions, founded by former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, is in talks to produce the biopic along with Winkler Films.
