# We begin with soccer: South Africa is through to the final round of the African Nations Championship qualifiers after beating Egypt 3-1 at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia. Goals from captain Neo Maema, Yandisa Mfolozi, and Siphelele Luthuli’s penalty, ensured Bafana Bafana won the two-legged tie 4-2 on aggregate after drawing the first leg one-all in Bloemfontein a week ago. Bafana Bafana will face Malawi next to determine who qualifies for the CHAN finals to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in August.
# Golf: Scotland’s Calum Hill shot an eight-under-par final round of 62 and emerged victorious after a three-way play-off to win the Joburg Open at the Houghton Golf Club. Hill and South Africa’s Jacques Kruyswijk and Shaun Norris recorded par on the first play-off hole. Norris dumped his second shot into the water, Hill tapped in for a par, while Kruyswijk made a bogey to gift the Scot the victory. Hill, who has now won two DP World Tour titles, says the play-off was intense:
# Cycling: Close to 28-thousand entrants took part in the 47th Cape Town Cycle Tour yesterday. South Africa’s 21-year-old Tyler Lange stormed to victory in the men’s elite race, while Germany’s Pia Grünewald delivered a masterclass in solo riding to clinch the women’s elite title. Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who completed the race alongside his wife, says the whole event was amazing:
# Cricket: England’s Harry Brook is facing a possible two-year ban from the Indian Premier League after withdrawing from this year’s tournament. This is the second consecutive year that he has pulled out before the start of the competiton. The 26-year-old, who was signed by Delhi Capitals last year, says he needs time to recharge after the busiest period in his career to date. Brook is considered a frontrunner to replace Jos Buttler as England’s white-ball captain following their group-stage elimination at the Champions Trophy.
# And finally, tennis: Last year’s runner-up, Daniil Medvedev, is through to the round of 16 of the Indian Wells Masters in the US. The Russian progressed after his local opponent, Alex Michelsen, retired with food poisoning just two games into their match. Eighth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece defeated Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-3, while Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki knocked out American Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 7-6. In the women’s draw, defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland beat Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-love, 6-2.
