# First up we have cricket: The Champions Trophy has reached the business end, with just four of the eight teams remaining. India topped Group A, with New Zealand in second place. The Proteas ended first in Group B, followed by Australia. In today’s first semifinal, India is playing Australia in Dubai. Australia is batting first. South Africa and New Zealand will face off in Lahore, Pakistan, tomorrow. The final will take place in Dubai or a city in Pakistan on Sunday, depending on whether India is playing.
# Soccer: Former Bafana Bafana striker, Benni McCarthy, has been appointed as the new head coach of Kenya. This follows his departure from Manchester United at the end of last season, where he was a first-team coach specialising in strikers. The 47-year-old’s previous managerial experience has been at Cape Town City and AmaZulu. Kenya will co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Tanzania and Uganda. McCarthy says the Kenyan team is a sleeping giant:
# Cycling: The City of Cape Town says it is ready to host the 47th Cape Town Cycle Tour, the world’s largest timed cycle race, on Sunday. Approximately 30-thousand cyclists will tackle three routes, including the traditional 109-kilometre route from the Grand Parade circling the Cape Peninsula. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says the 78-kilometre invitational women’s race and the under-17 boys race will take off from Fish Hoek and finish in Green Point:
# Rugby: Defending champion Ireland is hoping its captain, Caelan Doris, will be fit to lead them in Saturday’s Six Nations clash with France in Dublin. Management says he is making positive strides in his recovery from a knee injury. Undefeated Ireland is currently on top of the log, with France in second place after beating Wales and Italy, but losing to England. After this weekend, only one round remains, with an unprecedented third consecutive title on the line for the Irish.
# And finally: Simone Biles, Max Verstappen, and Carlos Alcaraz have been nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards. Biles, the world’s most decorated gymnast, is up for sportswoman of the year alongside world number one tennis player Aryna Sabalenka and athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. Four-time Formula One champion Max Verstappen, tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, and Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis are nominated for sportsman of the year. The USA basketball men’s national team and the F1 team McLaren are up for team of the year.
