# A Limpopo female police officer is set to appear before the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the alleged murder of her 26-year-old son and his 16-year-old girlfriend. Police spokesperson, Malesela Ledwaba says a 49-year-old officer was arrested on Thursday night after she allegedly shot and killed her son and injured his girlfriend at home in Mokomene following a heated argument with her son. He says the girlfriend who was hospitalised, sadly also succumbed to injuries yesterday:
# The DA says the South African Police Service may have misled Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police regarding debts owed to the Department of Public Works. Despite claims from national Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola that no arrears exist, it has been revealed that SAPS owes approximately two-billion-rand. The DA’s Dianne Kohler Barnard says police stations remain dilapidated and detective services are under-resourced:
# The University of Pretoria Student Representative Council has launched the A Re Ageng Bokamoso, a student-led fundraising campaign that aims to raise five-million-rand to support students who are facing financial hardship. SRC president Vhutshilo Muambadzi says with registration closing on 21 February for this academic year, timely support is crucial to ensure that students who require financial assistance can enrol and continue their studies without disruption:
# Tennis: Spanish maestro Rafael Nadal congratulated long-time rival Diego Schwartzman on his great race after the Argentinian announced his retirement. The 32-year-old never got the better of the Spaniard, only beating him once in their 12 meetings. But Nadal, who ended his illustrious career at the end of last year, says Schwartzman had been a great example of struggle and overcoming, and they shared many moments on the circuit. Several other players, including Germany’s Alexander Zverev and retired Austrian Dominic Thiem, also posted tributes to Schwartzman.
# And a 24-year-old Venezuelan Adrián Simancas was kayaking in Bahía El Águila in the strait of Magellan when a whale engulfed him and his yellow kayak for a few seconds before letting him go. Simancas’ father, Dell, who was kayaking with him, recorded the incident. Adrián emerged unharmed, and if it were not for the fact his father had recorded it, perhaps his story would be hard to believe. Adrian said he thought he was going to die after being swallowed, and that he had been eaten.
