# We begin with hockey: The South African men’s team claimed their first-ever medal, defeating Belgium six-five in the bronze medal match of the indoor World Cup in Porec, Croatia. Mustapha Cassiem scored a hat-trick, his brother and captain Dayaan Cassiem scored twice, and Hans Neethling scored a penalty as South Africa secured the win. The South African women’s side defeated Australia three-two to finish ninth. Germany’s men and Poland’s women were crowned champions.
# Netball: England defeated South Africa 61-55 in the final at the Copper Box Arena in London to win the Nations Cup for the first time. South Africa made a fast start in the match to lead 15-12 at the end of the first quarter, but Jess Thirlby’s side fought back to claim the victory. Uganda won the third-place playoff match, beating Malawi 50-45. Proteas coach, Jenny van Dyk, says they are disappointed at the result but the players gave everything:
# Cricket: Titans fast bowler Corbin Bosch has been named as the replacement for injured Anrich Nortjé in the Proteas squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The 30-year-old made his ODI debut in December last year. Eighteen-year-old Kwena Maphaka has also been added as a travelling reserve. Bosch and Maphaka, along with batter Tony de Zorzi, departed for Karachi yesterday to join the squad for the remainder of the tri-nation ODI series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
# Golf: England’s Jamie Rutherford claimed his maiden victory on the Sunshine Tour, with a two-stroke win in the Cape Town Open at the Royal Cape Golf Club. He shot a final round 69 in windy conditions to win on 14 under par. South Africa’s Keenan Davidse finished second on 12 under par with a final round of 67, while American Matt Oshrine finished in third place. Rutherford says he is happy that his consistency has paid off:
# And finally, tennis: Four-time Grand Slam champion, Carlos Alcaraz, claimed the first indoor hardcourt title of his career by winning the Rotterdam Open in the Netherlands on his debut. The 21-year-old Spaniard defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, to capture his 17th tour-level title. He is the first Spanish champion in the tournament’s 52-year history. Alcaraz says he takes a lot of confidence in his performance in the tournament:
