# Miss SA Mia le Roux has launched the Mia le Roux Movement to empower people living with disabilities with opportunities for education and skills development. The movement aims to advocate for South Africa’s estimated four-million deaf people while raising awareness about the many forms of exclusion that persist in society. Le Roux says it has become her mission to break barriers for all who are excluded:
# Award-winning South African musician, Makhadzi, made a public call for students who are facing registration fee challenges, offering to cover the costs for 20 university students. The University of Venda became one of the lucky beneficiaries, with ten students selected to have their registration fees fully paid by the musician. The university says Makhadzi’s dedication to uplifting students from diverse backgrounds serves as a powerful reminder that sometimes, all it takes is one act of kindness to change the trajectory of someone’s life.
# Cape Town has been named the best long-haul city break in the world for British travellers. In a survey conducted by Which?, over one-thousand-500 British travellers ranked their experiences in cities outside Europe over the past year. Almost two-thousand-500 destinations were rated across seven measures, including food and drink, accommodation, cultural, tourist attractions, and value for money. Cape Town Tourism says the metro’s unbeatable mix of adventure, culture, and affordability outshone all the others, including hotspots like Tokyo, Sydney, Dubai, and Los Angeles.
# University of KwaZulu-Natal’s head of Paediatrics and Child Health, professor Refiloe Masekela, has received the prestigious American Thoracic Society World Lung Health Award. The award recognises the outstanding contributions of individuals in improving global lung health through translational or implementation research, healthcare delivery, and education. The university says a renowned paediatric pulmonologist, Masekela’s work has significantly influenced the field of paediatric respiratory medicine, earning her international acclaim.
# And finally: The longest-serving editor-in-chief of Vogue Magazine, Anna Wintour, has received an honour from King Charles. This is part of the king’s Birthday Honours. She received the Companion of Honour award for her services to fashion. Wintour, who was made a dame by Queen Elizabeth in 2017 for her contribution to fashion and journalism, says she was completely surprised and overwhelmed to receive her second accolade at Buckingham Palace:
