BULLETIN 31 January 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# A new foal, born three weeks ago, has blended with the Cape mountain zebra herd at De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape’s Overberg. This exciting arrival coincides with International Zebra Day celebrated today. The day highlights the need to protect zebra species. CapeNature’s conservation efforts have seen the population of this once-endangered species steadily growing. A recent aerial survey showed over 100 Cape mountain zebras across De Hoop and the Overberg Test Range. Meanwhile, visitors are urged to observe the wildlife respectfully.
# Richards Bay Minerals in KwaZulu-Natal has signed a third Power Purchase Agreement with Red Rocket South Africa ahead of the Overberg wind farm construction in the Western Cape. The project, set to begin this year, will reduce RBM’s greenhouse gas emissions by 30-percent. RBM will receive 230-Megawatts of the farm’s 380-MegaWatts capacity. The company says this agreement adds to its renewable energy efforts, as part of the company’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
# And finally: African leaders, global investors, and innovators are preparing to engage in discussions on advancing sustainable development efforts across Africa, to foster climate resilience. Africa’s Green Economy Summit is set to return to Cape Town next month. Over 50 startups and projects will seek out investment in renewable energy, green transport, and sustainable agriculture. Key discussions will focus on climate finance, policy reforms, and gender finance.
