# The Institute of Race Relations says the Expropriation Act is an assault on property rights
# The DA in the Western Cape requests an update on the Hout Bay oil spill
# And Tyla makes history on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart
# The Institute of Race Relations says the signing into law of the Expropriation Act by president Cyril Ramaphosa represents a frontal assault on property rights in South Africa. The act amongst other things empowers the state to seize land from individuals and businesses without paying for it. IRR’s Hermann Pretorius says they are consulting their legal team to challenge the act based on unconstitutionality:
# The DA in the Western Cape is calling on minister of Fisheries, Forestry and the Environment, Dion George, to provide an update on the investigation into the recent oil spill in the area between Hout Bay and Kommetjie in Cape Town. The spill left at least 19 critically endangered African penguins contaminated. The DA’s Dave Bryant says it is vital that the source of the spill is identified as soon as possible to avoid any further threat to wildlife:
# Two Colombian military planes with some 200 nationals expelled from the United States arrived in Bogota after a blazing row over migrant deportations. President Gustavo Petro posted photographs of the migrants disembarking without handcuffs, writing: “They are Colombians, free and dignified, and in their homeland where they are loved.” Petro on Sunday stepped back from the brink of a full-blown trade war with the US after president Donald Trump threatened Colombia with sanctions and massive tariffs for turning back two US military planes carrying deported migrants.
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler says he is excited to return to action, as it has been frustrating not being able to play. The American injured his right hand while helping to prepare Christmas Day dinner in December, which required surgery. He and Rory McIlroy make their first PGA Tour appearances of the year this week, as part of a star-studded field at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California. Scheffler says he loves the Pebble Beach golf course:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-67-cents and the euro at 19-rand-47-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-25-cents and Bitcoin trades at 102-thousand-695-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-750-dollars-40-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-36-cents a barrel.
# And finally: South African Grammy award-winning singer, Tyla, has become the first African female artist in 57 years to chart two solo entries on the US Billboard Hot 100. Her hit tracks, Water and Push 2 Start, made her the second African female artist since Miriam Makeba to land on the chart. Tyla’s songs peaked at number seven and 88. Other South Africans that have made the Billboard chart are folk-rock ensemble Four Jacks and a Jill, the late Hugh Masekela, and the Rock band Seether.
