# The SA Police Services’ Charity Golf Day has raised over eleven-million-rand for the South African Police Service Education Trust, supporting children of members who died in the line of duty. Since 2010, SAPSET has assisted over one-thousand-700 children, with 54 graduates and 146 matriculants. Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk says police leadership emphasis the initiative’s role in empowering young South Africans through education and fostering academic excellence:
# The University of Johannesburg says it is making strides toward breaking barriers and empowering students who need it most. The university recently partnered with retail giant SPAR to donate one-thousand packs of sanitary towels to students from underprivileged backgrounds. The donation was divided between UJ’s Centre for Student Health and Wellness and UJ Sport. The institution’s Molimi Geya says this contribution is not just a donation; it’s an investment in the well-being and future of students and the wider community.
# The University of Pretoria’s Department of Statistics is partnering with the United Nations Volunteers to develop the first-ever Global Volunteer Index. Northumbria University, under the umbrella of its Centre for Global Development, will lead the research, writing, and analytical work. The University of Pretoria will lead the development of a framework for a global volunteering index. The institution says this project will anchor its standing as an international leader in translating cutting-edge statistical sciences research excellence into volunteering settings and practice.
# Thirty-four-year-old Japanese man, Yuji “Gump” Suzuki has completed a six-thousand-kilometre journey from Kenya to South Africa on foot while pulling a rickshaw. Starting in July last year, he travelled through Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia. Known for his global treks, Suzuki previously completed journeys from China to India, across Europe, and the United States. At the end of his journey on Sunday, an emotional Suzuki thanked all his supporters for the encouragement in his quest.
# And finally: Mel Gibson’s first directorial film since 2016, Flight Risk, reached number one in its opening weekend in North American theatres. The action-thriller, which stars Mark Wahlberg, is about a pilot transporting an air marshal accompanying a mob-connected witness to trial. Second place went to Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, which opened six weeks ago. Sony’s R-rated buddy comedy One of Them Days slid to third place with Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remaining in fourth and Disney’s Moana 2 rounding out the top five.
