# ActionSA considers legal action following the signing of the Expropriation Bill
# The GOOD Party is calling on the government to accelerate land reform
# And Nehawu vows to fight for community health workers to enjoy full employment benefits
# ActionSA says it is considering legal action in response to president Cyril Ramaphosa’s enactment of the Expropriation Bill. The law repeals the pre-democratic Expropriation Act of 1975 and sets out how organs of state may expropriate land in the public interest for varied reasons. ActionSA’s, Matthew George, says effective land reform is achievable within existing legislative and regulatory frameworks, but necessitates dedicated political leadership committed to equitable ownership distribution:
Meanwhile, the GOOD Party has welcomed Ramaphosa signing the Bill into law, saying now it’s time to accelerate land reform. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says expropriating land in appropriate circumstances is one of the tools at government’s disposal to accelerate land reform:
# The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union has welcomed the Labour Court judgement, setting aside the arbitration award in the case of community healthcare workers. The court reviewed the arbitration award that ruled against the union’s application to force the Department of Health to appoint community healthcare workers permanently. This as the workers are on recurring fixed-term contracts. Nehawu says it will continue fighting for the permanent absorption of all community health workers with full employment benefits that are enjoyed by other public servants.
# A Spanish court has ruled that a single mother has the right to the parental leave a partner would have been due if she had one, effectively doubling her leave. The unidentified woman asked to be given the 16 weeks of parental leave that would have been granted a partner, in addition to the 16 weeks she was entitled to, after she gave birth in January 2022 in the southeastern region of Murcia. After social services rejected her request she turned to the courts. Murcia’s high court ruled in her favour.
# Soccer: Manchester United boosted their chance of automatic qualification to the last 16 of the Europa League following a two-one victory over Rangers. Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland scored an own goal before substitute Cyril Dessers equalised for the Scottish club. However, United captain Bruno Fernandes scored a 92nd-minute winner. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Hoffenheim three-two putting them in a strong position to qualify automatically for the knockout stage. United manager, Ruben Amorim, insists that there is still room for improvement:
