Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# A study in Nature Energy has revealed that only seven-percent of global green hydrogen projects have been realised. This poses challenges for South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Investment Plan as high costs were found to be a key obstacle. Currently, green hydrogen costs between 94 and 113-rand per kilogram compared to 28-rand per kilogram for grey hydrogen. Researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research predict costs may drop by 2037. The experts suggest subsidies, clear regulations, and carbon pricing in order to enhance competitiveness.
# University of Essex and Edinburgh researchers have highlighted the alarming link between air pollution and cardiovascular health in Africa. Over 70-percent of air pollution-related deaths globally are reportedly due to heart and blood vessel diseases. In Africa, cardiovascular deaths are now the second leading cause of death after infectious diseases. With air pollution levels three times higher than in high-income regions, experts have urged expanded monitoring and public health interventions to address the crisis.
# And finally: A record rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels in 2024 has derailed efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celcius. According to the UK Met Office, between 2023 and 2024 carbon dioxide levels increased by nearly 3.6 parts per million molecules of air to a new high of more than 424. The surge has been attributed to record fossil fuel emissions, weaker carbon sinks, wildfires and the effects of the natural El Niño phenomenon. Last week it was confirmed that 2024 was the hottest year on record.
