# We begin with cricket: Cricket South Africa says Gerald Coetzee remains in contention for selection for the upcoming Champions Trophy, and a decision on his inclusion will be made in the first week of February. The fast bowler has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing SA20 tournament with a left hamstring strain. He was touted to replace Anrich Nortjé, who was ruled out of the 50-over tournament in Pakistan due to injury. CSA says Coetzee’s recovery will be monitored closely by the Proteas’ medical team.
# Rugby: Bordeaux Bégles thrashed the Sharks 66-12 in their final Champions Cup pool game in France. The Sharks raced into a 12-point lead before the homeside fought back to hold a 19-12 advantage at half-time. Damian Penaud scored a tournament-record six tries as a blistering second-half display helped Bordeaux secure the top spot in Pool 1 and home advantage in the round of 16 in April. No South African team will play in the Champions Cup last 16 as the Stormers and the Bulls are also out.
# The Western Cape MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, has congratulated all the nominees and winners of the Provincial Sport Awards. The ceremony was held in Paarl. Some of the winners included Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok, who received the Ministerial Commendation award. Mackenzie says cyclist Alan Hatherly was crowned sportsman of the year and pool world champion Tasneem Solomons sportswoman of the year:
# Tennis: World number one and defending champion, Jannik Sinner, battled his way to the Australian Open quarterfinals. The Italian, who struggled with heat and called a medical timeout, defeated Denmark’s Holger Rune, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Sinner will face either Australian Alex de Minaur or American Alex Michelsen next. In the women’s draw, American Madison Keys beat Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in three sets to make the quarterfinals for the fourth time. Sinner says the match was tough:
Meanwhile, ten-time champion Novak Djokovic expects a tough battle against Carlos Alcaraz in their quarterfinal clash tomorrow. The Serbian continued his bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 win over Czech’s Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round. Alcaraz progressed when Briton Jack Draper retired with a hip injury. The Spaniard has beaten Djokovic three times out of seven matches. Djokovic says he is looking forward to facing Alcaraz:
